Google Workspace Sending Limits: How Many Cold Emails Can You Send Per Day?
inboxy team · · 3 min read

Google Workspace lets each user send up to 2,000 emails a day. For cold email, that number is a trap. Send anywhere near it from one inbox and you will be in spam long before Google suspends you. Here are the official limits, the safe numbers, and how teams scale past them.
The official Google Workspace limits
| Limit | Per user |
|---|---|
| Messages per day | 2,000 (500 during a trial) |
| Total recipients per day | 10,000 |
| Unique external recipients per day | 3,000 |
| Recipients per message | 2,000 total, 500 external |
The limits reset on a rolling 24-hour window, not at midnight. Free Gmail accounts are lower, at around 500 a day. Google can change these, so check its current help page if you are close to them.
What happens when you hit them
Go over a limit and Google stops that user from sending for up to 24 hours, and senders get a bounce saying the limit was exceeded. Repeated hits can get the account flagged for review. But for cold email, the real damage happens much earlier: your emails start landing in spam well below the hard cap.
The number that matters: 30 to 50 per inbox
Most cold email teams cap each Google Workspace inbox at 30 to 50 emails a day, follow-ups included. Why so far below 2,000?
- Cold emails go to people who have never heard from you, so they get far less engagement than normal email.
- Gmail and Outlook judge each inbox on its own pattern. A sudden jump in volume looks like a compromised or spam account.
- Spam complaints and bounces count against a smaller base, so a few bad sends hurt more.
New inboxes should start even lower. Warm them up for two to four weeks first, then ramp from about 10 a day to your target. See how long email warmup takes.
How to send more without burning inboxes
Teams scale by adding inboxes, not volume per inbox:
- More mailboxes. 20 inboxes at 40 a day is 800 emails a day, all within safe limits.
- More domains. Two or three mailboxes per domain spreads risk, so one problem never takes down everything.
- Rotation. Your sequencer spreads each campaign across all connected inboxes automatically.
- Warmup that keeps running alongside campaigns, so every inbox keeps earning positive engagement.

Quick answers
Can I raise the limit? No. The per-user limits are fixed. You add users (mailboxes) instead.
Do aliases have their own limit? No. Aliases share the limit of the mailbox they belong to, and sending cold email from many aliases on one inbox concentrates risk.
Does a sequencer change the limits? No. Instantly, Smartlead and others send through your Google Workspace account, so Google's limits and reputation rules still apply.
